Study Habits

Filed under: The Magical Me — Roshan @ 11:06 am

I have got my own way of studying. This study habit is quite difficult to change at this stage of my life. It can probably be changed only in highly critical situations (not normal examinations ๐Ÿ˜› ). Otherwise, I stick to that habit always.

Most people tend to expect a lot from me in terms of studies, be it my parents, relatives, friends or teachers. They expect me to study on a regular basis i.e. daily or they think that I study daily (in case of friends and relatives). Only my parents and my close friends know my real study habits. Infact, I can decide to call my friend โ€˜closeโ€™ only if he knows my real study habits ๐Ÿ˜‰ . Still they expect a lot from me!!! To all others, if I say anything about my study habits, they would hardly believe it :(. Some would think I am lying; some would think I am showing-off; some would think I am playing a prank; some would think I am being humble.

Consider these:

  • There is a chair in a tank. I am sitting on the chair and sleeping. Water flows into the tank and the tank is slowly filled. I would not awake from my slumber until the water is up to my nose level; sometimes eye level or head level or over head level. Then I try to swim in the water and try to find a way out.
  • 6 runs are needed of 6 balls. I donโ€™t even try to hit runs of the 1st 5 balls. In the last ball, I would try to hit a six!! (strictly hypothetical situation).

My study habits are something like that. I donโ€™t study until the last day (very rarely last few days) for the examinations. When I start studying, I barely have time to study all that I need. I start studying at what I call break-neck speed; maximum amount of knowledge should be gained in minimum amount of time i.e. optimum utilization of time.

Now, after knowing this, some may think I mug-up or by-heartโ€ฆ. Maybeโ€ฆ. Sometimes, on the last day before examination, with no time, such drastic measures are necessary if you arenโ€™t able to understand anything; something is better than nothing. However, I am pathetic at memorizing without understanding (I was terrible in social studies during my high school ๐Ÿ˜ฆ ). On the other hand, I have always experienced better results with understanding first and memorizing that if necessary.

Most people wonder how it is possible to study well, with not even one day, a huge amount of syllabus!!!! I feel it is possible, for the examinations, as well as for knowledge. However, for knowledge, it would take more time than that for examinations. Only if the subject I am trying to study is alien completely i.e. I donโ€™t know anything about it, then it may be difficult to do so and I will require more time or to do it in less time, I may have to mug-up or by-heart and in the end, suffer.

The credit for my good results in my II PUC and CET examinations should go to the tuitions I went to ๐Ÿ™‚ . Due to the tuitions, I was constantly in touch with those subjects and I had understood it quite well. Regular tests were being conducted there and I was trying to study for them sincerely, though the study habit remained the same (previous day study). Since I had already understood them, I took very little time to study them for the examinations. This ensured that I achieved good results in the main examinations, even though I canโ€™t say that I gave my 100% or my best efforts (maybe considerably more effort than other examinations, but still not the best effort I can put in).

Now, in engineering, attending some classes and understanding something, helps for the internals; and studying for the internals as sincerely as possible helps for the semester examinations (The studying habit hasnโ€™t changed).

The results of II PUC and engineering examinations arenโ€™t comparable as the efforts I have put in arenโ€™t comparable (tuitions and tests throughout the year makes a lot of difference). Though I would say that if I put in the same efforts for engineering examinations as I had put in for II PUC, the results would be almost the same, though not the same as paper-setting and evaluation matters too.

  2. Dear close friend,
    I have discussed about that question with you before. Still, if you havent yet understood it properly, I will definitely answer that question in my next posts about “examinations”.

  3. Your post says the same I feel other than those of II puc stuff. I do the same kind of studies(wait till the fire) but I am bad at memorizing!

  4. Good to see you falling in the same category ๐Ÿ˜‰
    “Only previous-day” study is extremely common, though the results vary drastically. The exception are a few dedicated (i call it that, for want of a better word) people who study regularly; the results vary here too!!

  5. First of all, thanks for going through my blog, and leaving some comments there.
    Coming to this post of yours, i must say, you have put down what MOST of the students (especially Engineering students) do. However, the fact remains that most people do mug (I’m not indicating you mug, though) and the question remains..”is our system of education bearing any effect?”

    I agree with you. As for the answer to your question, my opinion is our education system isn’t the worst in the world(I have heard western education systems are worse from my teachers) but I don’t think our system can be called “good” ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    @uday
    First of all, you have yourself proven that I can’t call you my “close” friend ๐Ÿ˜›
    Second of all, you all don’t call me “nerdo” ๐Ÿ˜› but call me “Bose” ๐Ÿ™‚
    You can ask anyone in our class who studies more among you and me, and you will get your answer. Remember, the question isn’t who gets more in examinations, but it is who “studies” more ๐Ÿ˜›
    I can’t do anything (and I have no intention of doing something) to prove that to you. It doesn’t matter to me whether you believe it or not. “I am what I am” ๐Ÿ˜›
    Anyway, my intuition says that you know how I study but still you don’t want to believe it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

  9. Engineering student and such studying habits… C’mon this is expected of us( being an engineer I can say that) It would be a shame if we study for months. Your habits are similar to other engineering students give or take a day or two. I believe that those engineers (students now) are real engineers rest all of them are muggers. I dont consider them as engg students at all (this is my personal opinion.) I have seen that the Other Kind never succeds in life as your kind.

    Wait for 5 years and you will know it.

    And yes I was also one of your kind.

    This isnt your fighting forum ๐Ÿ˜›

    @uday
    All I can say to you is “Grow up!!!” ๐Ÿ˜›
    Look… You know all this and I have told it to you many times; this is the last time I am telling you(I am telling only because I want you to be my “close” friend ๐Ÿ˜‰ )… Our gang is together till 4 almost daily(when college is there) playing cricket or cards. Then I sit in the net for 2 hours atleast daily!!! On holidays, if I am in home, I will almost always be online – orkutting and blogging. Moreover, I do read a lot of books, a lot of times. So, there is “practically” no time for me to study other than the day before the examination ๐Ÿ˜‰
    This is ALL that I can say.. If you dont believe me, I cant help it!!! I dont care.. poda:P
    Results doesnt show “how much you read”(oh.. wait and read my next post on tat:P)
    I have applied for reval as I FELT I had got atleast 10-15 marks less in the 2 most important subjects last sem – ADA and FAFL. You get less in some subjects or more in some other subjects; Since I got less in important subjects, I applied reval ๐Ÿ˜›

  23. My reading habits are like this :
    Prepare a huge plan with timetable when to finish what. According to the plan, open each chapter/topic. And keep staring at the plan instead of following it.
    Postpone/procastrinate till the last day assuming that I can grasp enough on last day.
    On last day, open the book and day-dream about world tour, getting famous and rich in life, giving press conferences, think about what to do after exams – which movie to watch, which place to visit, how best to prepare for next exams -from the beginning, how to be desciplined “next time” and prepare a plan for next time’s preparation.
    And finally decide that this is not the way to prepare for exams. There is no point in scoring marks than knowing things. There is no point in following others. And then open up a totally out of syllabus book and understand the concepts.
    [Infact I always read out of syllabus topics with more interest. I have allergy to follow the topics in syllabus. By reading other things I get little pride that I know something that many others dont and all others know the same thing!!]
    And then blame the system (examination system, education system), muggers, toppers, valuators and everyone else for not getting enough marks ๐Ÿ™‚

  24. hi dude,
    Let me come to the point. i’m not much convinced with your strategies(or habits). studying for the sake of exams is the hopeless thing that we are following ever since the grade schools. what i feel is, do love the subjects. studying for wisdom is much better than studying for cognisance. The present education system is drying all our hidden talents. “we have aligned ourlselves for the mncs, we have aligned ourlselves to be slaves”. yes its all inevitalble for now……….

  25. @rk
    bro.. I was the “same”, except reading “outside” syllabus, during my SSLC and II PU exams.
    Now, I think I can put it like this. I have got more “sensible”, you can say. I don’t waste time in planning ๐Ÿ˜‰ I take things as they come ๐Ÿ™‚

    @pavan
    I understand da!! Our education system has made most of us like that ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
    I sometimes regret that it is LIKE that, but I can’t help it.
    I definitely agree that practical knowledge is more important than scoring in exams!!!
